Johan Rönning was founded in 1933 by the Norwegian Johan Rönning who originally came to Iceland in 1922 for High Voltage installation work in Iceland's first hydro-electric power plant. Johan Rönning soon became one if Iceland's largest electrical contractor and participated in many of the vast projects on Iceland during that time. The person Johan Rönning is controversially considered to be one of Icelands leading person to electrolyze the country.

The company Johan Rönning became limited company (Ltd) in 1941 and since 1961 concentrated entirely on selling and servicing electrical products.

Current owners Bogi Þór Siguroddsson, active chairman and Linda Björk Ólafsdóttir bought the company in 2003.

In 2007, Johan Rönning merged with it´s sister companies Sindra-Stál ltd. and Hebron ltd.

In 2018, Johan Rönning merged with it´s sister company Vatn & veitur ltd.

In 2019, Johan Rönning merged with it´s sister company S. Guðjónsson ltd.

In 2021 Johan Rönning merged with it´s sister company Áltak and their parent company Fagkaup and are today a part of Fagkaup ltd. Today we operate 11 different sales- & service units around Iceland with 165 employees.

The company emphasizes greatly on human resources and has been awarded nine times in recent years as the Company of Excellence from 2011 and the Company of the Year in seven consecutive years 2012 to 2018 by VR (Commercial and office workers union). The company has been nominated "Strongest on Iceland" in seven consecutive years 2014 to 2020 by Creditinfo (financially bench marking) and also received Equal pay Certification in 2013 by VR (Commercial and office workers union) and operates today under BSI standard ÍST 85:2012-Equal Pay.
