Johan Rönning was founded in 1933 by the Norwegian Johan Rönning who originally came to Iceland in 1922 for High Voltage installation work in Iceland's first hydro-electric power plant. Johan Rönning soon became one if Iceland's largest electrical contractor and participated in many of the vast projects on Iceland during that time. The person Johan Rönning is controversially considered to be one of Icelands leading person to electrolyze the country.

The company Johan Rönning became limited company (Ltd) in 1941 and since 1961 concentrated entirely on selling and servicing electrical products.

Current owners Bogi Þór Siguroddsson, active chairman and Linda Björk Ólafsdóttir bought the company in 2003. In 2007, Johan Rönning merged with it´s sister companies Sindra-Stál ltd. and Hebron Ltd. which current owners had bought the years before and are today a part of Johan Rönning ltd. Today the company operates 10 different sales- & service units around Iceland with 75 employees.

The company emphasizes greatly on human resources and has been awarded several times in recent years as the company of excellence in 2010/2011 and the Company of the Year in three consecutive year 2012, 2013 and 2014 by VR (Commercial and office workers union). The company was also nominated "Strongest on Iceland" in 2014 by Creditinfo (financially bench marking) and also received Equal pay Certification in 2013 by VR (Commercial and office workers union) that currently is still active.
